Computer engineering is often referred to as electronic and computer engineering. It combines both electrical engineering and computer science to provide additional background in software design and hardware-software integration.

Computer engineering is responsible for all aspects of computing. The design of microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers is all done by computer engineers. Computer engineers are also responsible for integrating computer systems in devices which have a number of computer systems.

Computer engineering is a relatively new academic field; however, the number of computer engineering programs across the nation has increased greatly. Course work in computer engineering programs consists of mathematics and science as the core of engineering discipline and more specific topics related to computer engineering including algorithms, database systems, software engineering, computer architecture and engineering, and computer systems engineering.

Computer engineering focuses on the transmission of information in the application of electronics. Robotics is a branch of computer engineering which uses computers along with other electronic components. It is necessary to have a broad understanding of electrical systems to work in robotics and computer engineering. Other tasks performed by computer engineers may include the design of mixed signal circuit boards, designing operating systems, and the design of VSLI chips.

Unmistakably, computer engineering is the forerunner of the development of computer technology.
